Cognition from Chaos: The Anatomy of the Gods by Charlie Guy

A great number of terms in not only anatomy, but also psychiatry, medicine, and other related disciplines, originate from Classical mythology. Some well known, some largely forgotten, understanding the history behind the terms we use to describe our own bodies can unlock a wealth of knowledge, understanding, and historical curiosity. Just as the anatomy of the human body is interconnected, so is the anatomy of the Gods and Goddesses of Classical mythology. Come along for this hour long talk, and learn about the body in a way you may never previously have considered.

About Charlie

Charlie Guy is an anatomist and social historian, holding masters qualifications in Human Anatomy from the University of Edinburgh, and in English from Edge Hill University, Lancashire. Charlie specialises in 19th century death practices, traditions, and superstitions, and her previous published work includes an article for Mausolus, the journal for the Mausolea and Monuments Trust, focusing on the history of graveyard architecture and continued communication with the dead. Charlie has also written articles around monumental architecture for Past Forward magazine (Wigan).

Charlie has significant expertise in literature, cultural history, medical history and practical anatomy, and has previously presented work at the University of Edinburgh Death and Identity in Scotland (2016) conference, the annual British Association of Clinical Anatomists (2019) conference, and was keynote speaker for the Natural Bodies (2020) conference held at the University of Worcester. In 2020, Charlie also presented an Elsevier Student Live webinar, focused on the value of humanities inclusion within science based curricula.

We are delighted to welcome her back for this online talk.
