Darker Nights to Brighter Days by Joe Collins
Saturday, 27th November ,2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pmFree
Join Wigan-born ex-rugby league player Joe Collins for this inspirational talk about real life turmoil and the fight back to health and happiness. The talk coincides with Movember, which actively promotes men’s health throughout November.
Hear in Joe’s own words the story of how he signed his professional rugby league contract at Warrington but a year later an event happened that would change his life forever. After an incident involving four lads, who were his best friends, he will share how he let this event ruin his rugby career and self-sabotage his life which peaked in him falling into the habit of taking drugs on nights out and one morning walking into hospital because he thought he was going to die.
Joe will openly talk about how this was a big wake up call for him as he realised the effect it had had on his life and how that manifested into him having panic attacks for months after. His story continues as he talks openly about how he went from being set for life to being in a lot of financial debt because of his business failure.
Joe will share how he faced the stigma of male mental health, turned his life around and demonstrate how self improvement and mindset techniques have helped him and will help anyone to change their lives, no matter how bad a place they find themselves in.
We are delighted to welcome Joe to the museum as the first in our programme of events for our new FREE rugby league exhibition ‘gerrumonside! the passion of rugby league past present and future’.
Joe’s talk takes place on the opening day of the new exhibition so come early or stay later to look round the fantastic displays.
Museum opening times are Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm.
