The Lolitas: Book Launch
Friday, 13th December @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pmFree
What’s a book launch?
You come, sit, stand and chat. I read some good poems and stories from the book for a bit. Other amazing people perform for a bit. We have some wine/tea/coffee and nibbles. If you want to buy a book you can. There’s no pressure to buy a book- it’s a celebration of its birth. A bit like wetting the baby’s head. All welcome- strangers and friends. It’s FREE.
Then the after-party is 8.30pm onwards- cocktails and drinks at The Bailiff’s Bar, The Old Courts and then The Tudor. Both places that helped this book get written.
(There will be an afternoon launch on Mon Dec 16th at Sunshine House, in partnership with Sunshine Writers and Shaun Fallows and his new book ‘Access-ability.’ 1pm-3pm)
Why this book?
The Lolitas is an extraordinary first collection.
It is a genre distorting, disconcerting, revolutionary dystopia of daughters, single parenting, love and abuse. From the lyric tenderness of the first kiss, to a place where poetry borders with reportage and records the experience of working with groomed girls in the care system.
Darkly humorous, the work weaves working class, feminist narratives of fiction, fact and foretelling, in an intensely readable, page-turning glut of the gamine.
The collection is in part a response to Nabokov’s Lolita, a response to the #metoo movement, and includes poems that explore the story of Shamina Begum, the Jeffrey Epstein scandal and how Japan treats teenage girls.
The Lolitas is part of the inspiration for the ‘Love Is A Rebellious Bird’ exhibition at The Fire Within and features in the LOVE room.
The book is being published by Verve Poetry Press.
Louise Fazackerley, a product of Orwell’s Wigan, is a recipient of BBC 3 The Verb’s New Voices award. She is signed to spoken word label ‘Nymphs & Thugs’ and tours the country extensively performing her work.
