DESCRIPTION:With the help of our ceramicist Emily\, you will be supported through the whole design process. From preparing the raw clay to sculpting your creation and glazing to finally firing your work\, Pottery Night is perfect for beginners or the more seasoned potter who would like a space to get creative. \nAll equipment from tools to glazes and a shared kiln firing is included in the ticket price. Please be aware that you may need at least two sessions to complete one pottery piece. This is to allow for drying time between building and glazing your creations! \nPlease be aware that our pottery night focuses on hand built and not thrown pottery. \nPLEASE NOTE: This session is an 18+ event\, but ages 12+ can attend with a parent or guardian. One ticket is required per person attending. \n  \nWigan STEAM is situated in The Old Courts (https://www.theoldcourts.com/) and the session will be held in the Community Room. Please come to entrance 5 and a member of staff will let you in a few minutes before the start time. Don’t worry if you are late! DESCRIPTION:Open Eye Gallery and Wigan Council are pleased to announce that the LOOK Photo Biennial will be taking place across different venues in Wigan and Leigh this December 2022. \nThe exhibitions are part of the Open Eye Hub\, a space to champion local voices and collaboration between communities of Wigan and Leigh and the wider photography community based in the UK and beyond. The hub will be a space to share ideas\, bring people together\, and through photography\, explore and communicate the urgent themes and issues of our times. \nWAYS OF LIVING ARCHIVE: SEE CHANGE  \nOpening in the new Horrocks Gallery in Leigh Spinners Mill will be an exhibition of photography from the Ways of Living archive and photography from Wigan & Leigh College Students. A preview of this exhibition will also be on display in the windows of the Castlefield New Art Spaces: Wigan. \nThe show has been co-curated by two local\, early career arts professionals\, Sara Lawlor\, and Hannah Tipping\, working alongside curator Mario Popham and Producer Charlie Booth. As part of their role with the Open Eye Hub\, the Community Fellows researched and selected pieces from the archive that resonated with them and that reflected issues they felt were relevant to local Wigan borough audiences. \nWith the warming world impacting every corner of the globe\, a sea change is necessary in our attitudes to nature and our place within it. One of the challenges of the changing climate is its scale and complexity\, which requires us to connect our everyday lived experience with events unfolding on our screens in distant\, disparate parts of the world. \nThe photographic projects in See Change\, made by artists working in northern Britain and abroad\, emphasises this interconnectedness of climate-based issue. The exhibition shifts the focus from the apocalyptic imagery that makes up much of the media coverage of the issue\, instead directing our gaze towards the quieter stories of people and communities adapting to and anticipating a changing world. \nThe photographic archive was established by Then There Was Us and Open Eye Gallery and was originally produced as an online platform. DESCRIPTION:Will ‘Cavaliero’ Kempe was one of the finest performers of the Elizabethan age. Gentleman player\, juggling jester\, headmaster of Morris dancers and London’s finest clown\, until…he fell out with Will ‘git face’ Shakespeare. \nKempe died alone and poverty stricken\, not very far from the original Globe Theatre\, of which he was an original shareholder and faded into obscurity. A world away from his former life having supposedly originated some of literature’s best-known characters\, including Bottom\, Dogberry\, and Falstaff. \nJoin Cavaliero Kempe as he gives his final performance to an audience of a mouse and a marrote\, and tells us what really happened between him and William Shakespeare. A bittersweet tale\, told by an idiot. \nThe play premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2021 at theSpaceUK @Symposium Hall and returned to the Fringe in 2022 and received rave reviews from audience and critics alike at both runs.

From preparing the raw clay to sculpting your creation and glazing to finally firing your work\, Pottery Night is perfect for beginners or the more seasoned potter who would like a space to get creative. \nAll equipment from tools to glazes and a shared kiln firing is included in the ticket price. Please be aware that you may need at least two sessions to complete one pottery piece. This is to allow for drying time between building and glazing your creations! \nPlease be aware that our pottery night focuses on hand built and not thrown pottery. \nPLEASE NOTE: This session is an 18+ event\, but ages 12+ can attend with a parent or guardian. DESCRIPTION:The Style Council epitomised Paul Weller’s transition from out-and-out mod\, punk\, angsty frontman into the further considered and utterly accomplished songwriter we saw with The Style Council. Formed in 2013 by Darren Fletcher (Paul Weller) and Steve Hayes (Mick Talbot)\, The Style Councillors have quickly built a loyal fanbase for the group which was Paul Weller’s home for the majority of the 1980’s and where he wrote some of his finest songs. Dani Clay (Dee C. Lee) and Craig Read (Steve White) are joined by the Bad Manners Horn Section and a stellar line up of musicians hell-bent on recreating the sound of The Style Council. \nSupport on the night is courtesy of Wiganner Rik Jones. DESCRIPTION:Open Eye Gallery and Wigan Council are pleased to announce that the LOOK Photo Biennial will be taking place across different venues in Wigan and Leigh this December 2022. \nThe exhibitions are part of the Open Eye Hub\, a space to champion local voices and collaboration between communities of Wigan and Leigh and the wider photography community based in the UK and beyond. The hub will be a space to share ideas\, bring people together\, and through photography\, explore and communicate the urgent themes and issues of our times. \nWAYS OF LIVING ARCHIVE: SEE CHANGE  \nOpening in the new Horrocks Gallery in Leigh Spinners Mill will be an exhibition of photography from the Ways of Living archive and photography from Wigan & Leigh College Students. A preview of this exhibition will also be on display in the windows of the Castlefield New Art Spaces: Wigan. \nThe show has been co-curated by two local\, early career arts professionals\, Sara Lawlor\, and Hannah Tipping\, working alongside curator Mario Popham and Producer Charlie Booth. As part of their role with the Open Eye Hub\, the Community Fellows researched and selected pieces from the archive that resonated with them and that reflected issues they felt were relevant to local Wigan borough audiences. \nWith the warming world impacting every corner of the globe\, a sea change is necessary in our attitudes to nature and our place within it. One of the challenges of the changing climate is its scale and complexity\, which requires us to connect our everyday lived experience with events unfolding on our screens in distant\, disparate parts of the world. \nThe photographic projects in See Change\, made by artists working in northern Britain and abroad\, emphasises this interconnectedness of climate-based issue. The exhibition shifts the focus from the apocalyptic imagery that makes up much of the media coverage of the issue\, instead directing our gaze towards the quieter stories of people and communities adapting to and anticipating a changing world. \nThe photographic archive was established by Then There Was Us and Open Eye Gallery and was originally produced as an online platform. DESCRIPTION:Derek Boak’s solo exhibition ‘Everything is Memory’ opens at our gallery this Friday 27th January 7-9pm.\n\n\nAll welcome\n\n\nDerek’s work is referenced from experiencing places\, surfaces\, discarded items and the ever-changing light and weather. From this\, he uses a variety of media to build surfaces which attemptt to capture some fleeting memory of these encounters.\n\n\nDerek Boak works in Southport. He taught in secondary and sixth-form education for nearly forty years\, encouraging students to work with local and national artists through studio practice.\n\nIn 1993\, he was the team coordinator for Anthony Gormley during the creation of ‘Field for the British Isles\, installing the work at Tate Liverpool and St. Helens College.\n\nHe became a Manchester Academy of Fine Arts member in 2004\, serving on its council for four years and continues to exhibit with them regularly.
